What to gather before a maintenance session
Keep the supplies basic: clean dry cloths, a soft brush or old toothbrush, mild soap and water for washable grime, a small amount of suitable light tool oil, and a container for dirty rags. A nonmetallic scraper can help lift packed mud without scratching finished surfaces.
Use cleaning products and lubricants according to their labels and the tool manufacturer’s current instructions. Some handle materials, coatings, precision instruments, and specialty cutting tools can be damaged by solvents or inappropriate oils.

1. Sort tools before cleaning

This dry step matters because dirt can hold moisture against steel and can turn into abrasive grit in a moving joint. Open and close pliers or shears while brushing around the pivot, but keep fingers clear of sharp edges and pinch points.
3. Wash only when dry cleaning is not enough
For sticky residue, soil, or ordinary grime, use a cloth lightly dampened with mild soapy water. Avoid immersing wood-handled tools or leaving any tool wet. Clean a small area at a time, then wipe away moisture promptly.

How to oil hand tools correctly
Oil has two distinct jobs: lubricating a moving part and leaving a light moisture barrier on uncoated steel. Neither job requires a wet-looking tool.
Oil pivots, threads, and sliding parts
Put a small drop of appropriate light lubricant at the pivot of pliers, shears, pruners, snips, and similar tools. Move the joint through its range several times, then wipe off the oil that squeezes out.
Use the same sparing approach on adjustable wrench screw mechanisms, threaded clamps, and other exposed moving parts. If a tool manufacturer specifies a particular lubricant, follow that instruction rather than substituting a general-purpose product.
A thick grease may stay in place on some heavily loaded mechanisms, but it can also collect dust and grit. For ordinary hand-tool pivots, a light lubricant applied in a small amount is usually easier to keep clean.

Do not return a damp tool to a closed box. A confined container can trap moisture against the metal. Let the tool dry fully first, then store it in its assigned location.
Control moisture, not just clutter
A shed, garage, or basement may have changing humidity even when it looks dry. Avoid placing tool storage directly beneath plumbing, against a damp exterior wall, or on a floor that can collect condensation or water.
Keep drawer liners, tool rolls, and storage cases clean and dry. If a liner becomes wet, dirty, or oil-saturated, remove it, clean the storage area, and dry everything before putting tools back. Check stored tools more often during humid seasons or after a leak.
Store specialty tools separately
